I open my mouth to speak, but no words come out. For the third time in under a year, my world is once again crashing in on me. A full minute elapses before I can barely choke out a single word. “Hess.”

Parsons answers with a broad smile.

“How long?”

“Since my parents died on that boat. It took me years to understand the truth, that Hess killed them so he could take me. But I finally came to understand that he needed to. They were apostates. He rescued me, taught me the true way of life.” He looks down at the rune. “Taught me how to fight and to be faithful to the call he would one day entrust to me.”

My words to Todd the other night echo in my mind: Hess trained The Four. He could have someone else in the background that he’s handing the baton to.

I blink, then look blankly at Parsons. “It’s you. He’s handing his mission over to you.” All of a sudden, the room stretches out before me like melting taffy and slowly starts to spin. My stomach churns, turning bitter and making me feel like I might throw up. This can’t be real. “But—but you were adopted,” I stutter. “You were raised by—”

“Don’t be so naive,” he interrupts. “You think we didn’t have the resources to alter my background and my personal details? What you said about my schooling and career was correct, but not about who raised me. It was the same person as the ‘generous donor’ who funded my education.”

My eyes widen as a connection is made. “Then you know Lila. You’ve known her for—”

“All eighteen years she’s been apart from you.” The revelation paralyzes me in my seat. “Yes… Darcy, Lila is my sister. I am her brother.”

“No… no…”

“And you know the best part of all this?” he sneers. “I know where she is.”

“You son of a bitch,” I spit. “Tell me.”

“I can’t do that. You know well enough that she is to play a key part in how the cycle will end. Of course, so will I.” He lifts his right hand off the table and raises it at me as if in greeting. “And this here. This is the hand that rings the knell.”

They’ll use Lila to kill me. Then Parsons will kill Lila. After that, he will take the baton from Hess and begin a new cycle afresh.

Parsons leans back lazily on his chair, his eyes boring into mine, full of defiant jest. “From the beginning, both of you were slated to be offered up. Nothing about that has changed. She’ll come for you.” He looks down at his hand and wiggles his fingers. “Then I will return the favor.”

The words are hardly past his lips when I spring from my chair. The edges of my vision darken, narrowing to a point as I fly across the table and curl my fingers around his throat. He twists under my grip, choking out guttural cries as I squeeze as hard as I can.
